The Catalina Island Conservancy is proud to offer the UC California Naturalist certification course as part of our Naturalist Training Program. Join Conservancy staff and expert guest lecturers to learn about the Ecology of California through the lens of a California Channel Island. This 40-hour plus course will take you through the natural history of California and Catalina. Topics include geologic formation, cultural history, Island Biogeography, to the restoration efforts of today. This science curriculum is paired with citizen science and interpretation tools. 

The mission of the UC California Naturalist Program is to foster a diverse community of naturalists and promote stewardship of California‚Äôs natural resources through education and service. Students in this course will join a community of California Naturalists and be eligible for 4 course credits through the UC system. The Catalina California Naturalist Program looks to create highly trained guides, volunteers, docents and most importantly, stewards, to spread the word of not only how special Catalina is but how important all Islands are.

2018 Course Schedule: (10) week course from March 16th- May 25th, 2018. 10 Friday evenings night class will be held at the Catalina Island Conservancy Nature Center, and six all day field trips will be held on Saturdays, times will vary. Course participants will complete a total of 40+ hours of coursework over 10 weeks.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: No refunds. If unable to complete the current course registered for, then you will be eligible to enroll in the next scheduled course without additional fees. If the Conservancy cancels a class for any reason, a full refund will be given to all enrollees. Refunds may require four weeks for processing.

Naturalist Training Program

The Catalina Island Conservancy Naturalist Training Program consists of 3 levels. 


The Level 1 Naturalist Training is a 2-hour overview of the natural and cultural history of the Island. The open level 1 Trainings are typically on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 8am and 4pm at the Nature Center at the top of Avalon Canyon. If you would like to schedule your own group of 6 or more people, please contact Hillary Holt


Level 2 Naturalist Training is an all-day field trip extension of the Level 1 training. RSVP early as space is limited. Upcoming dates for Level 2 Training are Mar. 7th, May 11th, July 11th, Sept. 14th, and November 28th. For a group of 12 or more people contact the Interpretation and Outreach Specialist. Level 1 training within the last year is a pre-requisite to Level 2.


Level 3 Naturalist Training  is a 10 week, 40-hour+, 4 credit course offered in partnership with UC California Naturalist Program. The dates of the course are March 16th- May 25th, 2018. It is all Friday evenings and 6 Saturday field trips taught and led by Catalina guest experts. It will be offered next as a week-long intensive course in the spring of 2019. The course is $400. Levels 1 and 2 and not pre-requisites for this course.
